Rider Down - An American Novel

“You riders up front, form a line.” Matt shouted as his horse caught up to ours.  “You’re the front line spread out and form a line.”
We all heard Matt we just weren’t sure what he wanted us to do.  He kept shouting and telling us to form a line. “You’re the front row.  You’ve got to keep the herd behind you, now spread out.”
My horse was not cooperating.  His ears were pinned back and he fought me with every muscle he had.  My heart was pounding as I fought to control him.
“Hey, get your horse away from mine.” a woman shouted, “He’s going to kick my horse.”   I pulled back on my horse’s reins. He wasn’t impressed and he inched closer to her horse’s rear end.  “Didn’t you hear me!” she shouted, “Get your horse away from mine.”
I yanked on my reins and pulled my horse’s neck all the way back to my chest, he should have stopped in his tracks.  Instead his nostrils flared and he started swinging his neck around and stomping his front legs.
I kicked him hard in the stomach he ignored me.  “Get your horse back in line!” Matt yelled as my horse leaped forward.  I felt like yelling, “Help!” but I knew no one would listen.  “I’m Sorry,” I shouted to the woman, “this horse is a little hard for me to handle.”
Matt was watching me.  He shouted, “ If you aren’t an experienced rider you need to drop back to the rear.  Stop your horse and let the herd pass you.”  He slowed his horse and pulled along side of me.  “Tyler will calm down in a couple of miles,” he said with a softer tone in his voice.  “He’s a thoroughbred and he hasn’t been ridden for six months.  He wants to be in front, it just his nature.”
My heart was racing. I tried not to look frightened.  “Oh my God, I thought, I’m on a racehorse that hasn’t been ridden in six months. I’m going to get killed.”  WILL SHE GET THROWN? CAN SHE CONTROL THIS POWERFUL FOUR LEGGED ATHLETE?
