Rider Down - An American Novel

I eagerly hopped onto the crowded bus.  As the doors closed a tall, well-built man with thinning white hair, stood up and faced us as he looked around the bus.  “Listen up folks,” he said in a loud masculine voice, “My name is Matt.”  His eyes opened wide and the deep lines on his tense weathered face tightened as he said, “Tomorrow is going to be a very long day. I expect all of you to be up by four in the morning and on a horse by sun up.”
He took a deep breath and slowly let it out as he popped open a beer and took a swift drink.  Then in a much louder, deeper voice he started warning us about the obstacles and dangers that lie ahead on this four-day trip.  The tone in his voice and the deep wrinkles on his leathery face grabbed all of our attention.
As Matt’s piercing voice echoed around the bus smiles faded and looks of confusion crept onto faces. Everyone started whispering.
“Was this a joke?”  I looked around me no one was laughing.  My heart started racing as I thought, “I must be on the wrong bus.”… WAS SHE ON THE WRONG BUS?
